Red Sox reportedly acquire third baseman Caleb Durbin from Brewers, ship out key piece in Rafael Devers deal

The Boston Red Sox are pivoting after losing third baseman Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs infree agency. Perhaps in response to that move, the team reportedly made a trade for Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Caleb Durbin on Monday, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Yahoo Sports

Durbin, 25, hit .256/.334/.387 as a rookie. It marks the third time in his career Durbin has been traded.

Durbin, who was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 14th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, is known as a scrappy, undersized player who is capable of strong defense at third base.

While he's hit well in the minors, his upside with the bat is a bit of a question after a middling rookie season. Durbin's slash line wasn't overly impressive, though was five percent better compared to the league average. He managed that despite one of the worst average exit velocities in the game and a low barrel rate. Both figures cast doubt on Durbin's ability to be a major producer at the plate moving forward.

But Durbin has been the type of player who has overcome those shortcomings in the past. Even last year, he showed an ability to optimize his approach at the plate, making sure he was pulling his fly balls, a good way for a player like Durbin to maximize his power output. That approach came through in the second half, which saw Durbin club seven home runs in 234 plate appearances. That came with a big reduction in Durbin's on-base percentage, so he'll need to find a way to reconcile that to be the best version of himself in the majors.

In addition to Durbin, the Red Sox alsoreceived Andruw Monasterio, Anthony Seigler and a competitive-balance round B pick, per MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Monasterio, 28, hit .270/.319/.437 in limited time with the Brewers last season. He saw time at every position on the infield and even played two innings in left field in 2025. Seigler, a 26-year-old third baseman, hit just under .200 in 73 plate appearances in the majors last year.

In exchange for Durbin, the Red Sox are parting ways with a key piece involved in the Rafael Devers trade. Left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison is the main player heading to the Brewers in the deal.

Harrison, 24, didn't see much time in the majors following that trade. After making eight appearances with the San Francisco Giants, Harrison was sent to the minors after being acquiring in the Devers deal. He made three major-league appearances with the Red Sox at the end of the regular season, putting up a 3.00 ERA over 12 innings.

Prior to the 2024 MLB season, Harrison ranked within the top half on most top-100 prospect lists, topping out as No. 23 on MLB.com's list heading into that season. While the lefty hasn't embarrassed himself in the majors yet, he hasn't lived up to those expectations either. The Brewers have a knack for getting the most out of their young pitchers, however, so this could be a great landing spot for Harrison.

The Brewers will also receive 27-year-old pitcher Shane Drohan and 28-year-old infielder David Hamilton in the deal. Hamilton is known more for his defensive ability and has hit just .222 since 2023. Drohan saw his strike-out rate soar in the minors last season, but was old for Triple-A and never got a chance in the majors with the Red Sox.

With the move, two of the key pieces acquired by the Red Sox in the Devers deal are no longer with the franchise. In addition to shipping out Harrison, theRed Sox also traded awaypitcher Jordan Hicks on Feb. 1. Hicks struggled mightily in limited work with the Red Sox following the Devers trade, posting an 8.20 ERA over 18 2/3 innings. The Red Sox were disappointed enough with that performance that they agreed to part with a better prospect since the Chicago White Sox covered a chunk of Hicks' salary moving forward.

Both the Brewers and Red Sox are expected to contend in 2026 after making the playoffs last season. Despite that, both teams still have a few glaring roster deficiencies. The Red Sox may have plugged one of those with Durbin. The Brewers, meanwhile, are engaging in a bit of a rebuild on the flyafter trading awayace Freddy Peralta earlier in the offseason.

The Durbin trade presents more questions in Milwaukee than answers, but the team has a strong recent track record of getting the most out of its young, unproven players. Harrison could be the next Brewers pitcher to take that leap, and the team does have a handful of impressive infield prospects who could replace Durbin's numbers before long.

Given Durbin's youth and low salary, the Brewers didn't need to make the move. The fact that they did speaks to the team's excitement about Harrison, and could be a sign it didn't see a higher ceiling for Durbin moving forward.

But Durbin has overcome the odds before. And if the Red Sox can further optimize his approach at the plate, there's potential for Durbin to develop into an extremely useful, well-rounded contributor in all facets of the game.

Best and worst Super Bowl commercials of 2026 as rated by experts

Super Bowl 60saw the Seattle Seahawks claim victory over the New England Patriots, but there were plenty of other winners — and losers — off the field during the game, with some brands scoring with their commercials and others fumbling their attempts for a loss.

The stakes are high for advertisers, with 30 seconds of airtime fetching as much as $10 million in Sunday's game. Brands pay additional millions tocraft their commercials, hire celebrity spokespeople and market their ads before the game.

The most effective Super Bowl ads this year delivered an emotional or humorous punch while also clearly conveying the importance or utility of their products, according to Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. The annual post-game ad breakdown ranked Google's spot for its Gemini artificial intelligence service as the best this year because it tugged at the heartstrings while also showing how the platform could be used to picture a newly bought home with fresh paint, a redecorated child's bedroom, and a cozy garden.

"Google's ad was really a product demonstration more than anything — most of the successful companies really communicated something about the brand," Tim Calkins, clinical professor of marketing and co-lead of the Kellogg School Super Bowl Advertising Review, told CBS News.

AI-related products also dominated Super Bowl 60 commercials, with nearly a quarter of the game'spre-released adsdealing with artificial intelligence in some way, according to an analysis from ad research firm iSpot.

Coinbase, meanwhile, earned a failing grade from Kellogg's ad review for using a Backstreet Boys song with karaoke-like lyrics. The ad failed to show viewers what Coinbase does or why they might want to use it, the business school said.

"It wasn't clear what they were advertising or what the benefit was," Calkins said. "Ultimately, a Super Bowl spot is about building the business and building the brand — you have to be clear about what the product is and why someone should buy it."

The Super Bowl 60 commercials leaned heavily on themes of kindness and community, with the ads ranked as the most heartwarming in more than five years, according to an analysis by Daivid, an AI-based advertising company. It adjudged theRocket commercial, featuring Lady Gaga singing Mr. Rogers' theme song, "Won't You Be My Neighbor," as the most emotionally engaging Super Bowl ad this year.

Best: Google Super Bowl ad

Google's ad, titled "New Home," touted the tech giant's AI capabilities, showing a mom and young son using its Gemini app to depict what their new house would look like with a new garden and different colored walls. The ad oozes cuteness, featuring an adorable baby, a charming house and a faithful family dog.

The Kellogg panel, which ranks the ads with grades from A to F, gave the Google ad an "A."

Best: Pepsi Super Bowl commercial

Pepsi's commercial had a "very simple premise," with a polar bear — an icon associated with rival Coca-Cola — picking Pepsi in a blind taste test, Calkins told CBS News.

Later in the ad, two polar bears are captured drinking Pepsi Zero Sugar sodas on a kisscam, referencing the infamousColdplay kisscam momentfrom 2025. Rather than shrinking from the spotlight, the bears embrace the moment, lifting their Pepsi cans for all to see.

"The ad makes people feel good about Pepsi — that is really the goal, for people who drink Pepsi to feel good," Calkins noted. "Some might debate if it helped Coke as well because the polar bears are so associated with Coke, but it brought you into the spot, and it had that great Coldplay moment."

Worst: Coinbase Super Bowl ad

Coinbase's ad got a failing grade from the Kellogg review panel because the pared-down commercial was unclear about what the crypto exchange does — or even that it has anything to do with cryptocurrency.

Worst: Ai.com Super Bowl commercial

Ai.com's ad earned a failing grade from the Kellogg review because its panelists said they were left unsure of what the service could do — a weakness when other AI-related ads provided strong messaging about the value of their products, Calkins said.

"Anthropic did a good job with differentiating its message — it was clear what it was and why you should use it," Calkins said. "Ai.com was a super confusing spot because it wasn't clear what the product is, or why you should go and use it."

This Underrated 2017 Crime Thriller Is Leaving Netflix in April 2025

Netflix has an avalanche of content, and it's often hard to know what to watch. Even if you found something you like and put it in your queue, it could leave the streamer before you watched it. With each month, the streamer loses a handful of movies, and there's one in particular you should watch before it exits in a couple of weeks. That movie, Molly's Game, isn't exactly obscure-it received a healthy reception from critics when it was released on Christmas Day, 2017, and it was a moderate success at the box office.

The Who's Pete Townshend Throws Shade at The Beatles

The Who's Pete Townshend offered a shady explanation of his differences with fellow 1960s rock titans The Beatles. When you look at early interviews with The Beatles, what they did is every time they were asked a serious question, they made a joke, Townshend, 79, complained on the Tuesday, March 25, episode of the Switched on Pop podcast. While The Beatles were initially seen as the clean-cut, mop-tops of pop music, The Who blasted onto the scene in 1965 with their revolutionary anthem My Generation.
