As Cadillac races to first F1 season, insiders advise patience for U.S. fans

Cadillac has become the first American auto giant to step into the fiercely competitive world of Formula One with a dedicated team. The storied U.S. brand unveiled the official team livery for its inaugural 2026 season during theSuper BowlSunday night.

The Super Bowl ad, which aired during the fourth quarter, shows the black and white livery. It features part of President John F. Kennedy's 1962 speech in which he said, "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard."

"That challenge is one that we are willing to accept ... and one which we intend to win," the edited speech said in the ad. The short feature closed out with the phrase: "THE MISSION BEGINS."

Leading Cadillac's effort is team principal Graeme Lowdon, who's built the team from the ground up, including new facilities in Indiana, the home of Indycar; North Carolina, the home of NASCAR; and Silverstone, England, the home of F1.

Speaking with CBS before the livery reveal, Lowdon called the road to get Cadillac into the F1 game "lengthy, with lots of twists and turns."

He recently shared that Cadillac had hired more than 500 people to join the new team, from a pool of some 143,000 applicants.

"There's a lot of expectation, and quite rightly so," Lowdon told CBS News. "General Motors is a hugely respected and impressive entity ... so there is that pressure, but that's what Formula One's about."

On the track, the American brand will be represented by former Mercedes team driver Valtteri Bottas, originally from Finland, and Mexican former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez. Widely considered to be veterans in the sport, they have a total of 16 Grand Prix victories and more than 500 race starts between them.

Having that level of experience behind the wheel, for an otherwise new team, was the chief motivator behind signing those two drivers, according to Lowdon.

"These guys know how to win," he said. "But above all else, they have an ability to gel a team together, so they're the focal point for the engineering activities, the garage activities, everything to do with operating a team at the highest level."

A slow start in a fast sport?

Experts say American fans hoping Cadillac will deliver a blockbuster first season as it steps into the ring against longtime heavyweights such as Ferrari and Mercedes may be disappointed.

The odds of Cadillac winning an F1 race, or even finishing on the podium this season, aren't generally considered very strong.

A winning Formula One car, and a winning team behind it, can take at least several seasons to develop, and require consistent investment.

Ross Brawn, the man widely credited as the architect behind German F1 sensationMichael Schumacher's success, told CBS News at the 2026 Autosport Awards in London that American fans may need some patience.

"It's very tough," Brawn said about the expectations for the Cadillac team this season. "They've got some very good people there. They have been sensible in choosing a lot of experienced people, but it's going to be very tough, so give them a bit of time."

David Croft, a prominent Formula One commentator for Britain's Sky Sports network, urged fans this year to look for development, not podium placement.

"Wherever they start the hope for me is that that's not where they'll finish," he told CBS News at the 2026 Autosport Awards. "They've got the drive and the determination, and they've got the right people in place to be a success eventually in Formula One, but it's going to take a bit of time."

Formula One's growing popularity in the U.S.

According to ESPN, which has long held Formula One broadcasting rights in the U.S., 2025 was the biggest season to date for average viewership for the sport, with 16 of the 24 races setting viewership records. The broadcaster has said that over the past eight years, average viewership per Grand Prix more than doubled, from 554,000 to 1.3 million in the U.S.

Formula One is still dwarfed in the U.S. as a racing spectator sport, with overall viewership for the Nascar Cup Series, for instance, averaging 3.2 million in 2025.

But insiders say the trajectory is undeniable, and encouraging.

"There was a time we'd go to Austin, the U.S. Grand Prix, and nobody would know what Formula One is when we got to passport control, let alone who we were," Croft told CBS. "Now people know who we are and what Formula One is, what it stands for."

Many pundits see the success of Netflix's "Drive to Survive" series behind F1's rising popularity in the U.S.

Croft also credited the addition of two more races in the United States, in Miami and Las Vegas. Alongside races in Texas, Mexico, Canada and Brazil, a total of six F1 races now take place within American time zones, making it easier for fans to tune into the action live, he noted.

Lowdon hopes Cadillac can ride the wave of popularity, and that fans will enjoy following the new team's journey - even if it means settling for relatively small "wins" at first.

"It's really so difficult to achieve success that, if you come along and join the journey ... then [fans] can enjoy, if you like, the minor victories along the way," he said. "Even just producing a car as complex as this is a minor victory in itself."

New England quarterback Drake Maye said he received shoulder injections beforeSunday's 29-13 Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

"I shot it up, so not much feeling," Maye said when asked how his shoulder felt. "It was good to go, and it felt all right."

Heading into the Super Bowl, Maye waslimited in practice with a shoulder injuryhe suffered in the AFC championship win over the Denver Broncos. On the team's initial injury report, the 23-year-old quarterback was listed as questionable with a shoulder injury and an illness that caused him to miss a practice.

Despite being removed from the injury report and telling reporters he felt well heading into the game, Maye struggled in the Super Bowl. Maye completed 27-of-43 passes for 295 yards, 2 touchdowns,2 interceptions and a fumble,with most of his passing yards coming in the fourth quarter. Maye's second interception was returned for a touchdown and all but closed the game.

Maye's protection also did him no favors. He was sacked six times on Sunday, compared with Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, who was sacked once. Patriots rookies Will Campbell and Jared Wilson struggled against the power of the Seahawks' pass rushers and the quickness of secondary players on blitzes sent by head coach Mike Macdonald on the left side of the offensive line.

Despite Maye's performance, he didn't know if his shoulder limited him in Sunday's game.

"I think it would be hard to say that," Maye said. "I was feeling good enough to be out there. I wouldn't put the team in harm's way to not be myself. Just didn't make plays tonight."

Maye struggled this postseason. TheMVP runner-upfinished with a 40.0 QBR in the playoffs, which ranked only above the Chicago Bears' Rex Grossman in 2006 and the Denver Broncos' Peyton Manning during his final season in 2015. Only Manning won a Super Bowl in that group.

Despite facing four of the top six regular-season defenses in yards allowed, Maye was able to win in different ways and help lead his team to the Super Bowl in his second NFL season. Maye moved the ball on the ground when defenses shut down the passing game or when winter weather conditions limited air yards against the Broncos in the AFC championship game.

In the end, it was not enough to win it all.

"This hurts," an emotional Maye said after the Super Bowl. "It definitely hurts. They played better than us tonight," he said. "They deserved to win that game. For the whole team and myself, what a journey it's been for us. I love this team and those guys in the locker room. We left it all on the field and just came up short. We didn't play our best, and that's what happens. ... It's going to sting for a while, but that's what you sign up for."

Red Sox reportedly acquire third baseman Caleb Durbin from Brewers, ship out key piece in Rafael Devers deal

The Boston Red Sox are pivoting after losing third baseman Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs infree agency. Perhaps in response to that move, the team reportedly made a trade for Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Caleb Durbin on Monday, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Durbin, 25, hit .256/.334/.387 as a rookie. It marks the third time in his career Durbin has been traded.

Durbin, who was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 14th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, is known as a scrappy, undersized player who is capable of strong defense at third base.

While he's hit well in the minors, his upside with the bat is a bit of a question after a middling rookie season. Durbin's slash line wasn't overly impressive, though was five percent better compared to the league average. He managed that despite one of the worst average exit velocities in the game and a low barrel rate. Both figures cast doubt on Durbin's ability to be a major producer at the plate moving forward.

But Durbin has been the type of player who has overcome those shortcomings in the past. Even last year, he showed an ability to optimize his approach at the plate, making sure he was pulling his fly balls, a good way for a player like Durbin to maximize his power output. That approach came through in the second half, which saw Durbin club seven home runs in 234 plate appearances. That came with a big reduction in Durbin's on-base percentage, so he'll need to find a way to reconcile that to be the best version of himself in the majors.

In addition to Durbin,the Red Sox alsoreceived Andruw Monasterio, Anthony Seigler and a competitive-balance round B pick, per MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Monasterio, 28, hit .270/.319/.437 in limited time with the Brewers last season. He saw time at every position on the infield and even played two innings in left field in 2025. Seigler, a 26-year-old third baseman, hit just under .200 in 73 plate appearances in the majors last year.

In exchange for Durbin, the Red Sox are parting ways with a key piece involved in the Rafael Devers trade. Left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison is the main player heading to the Brewers in the deal.

Harrison, 24, didn't see much time in the majors following that trade. After making eight appearances with the San Francisco Giants, Harrison was sent to the minors after being acquiring in the Devers deal. He made three major-league appearances with the Red Sox at the end of the regular season, putting up a 3.00 ERA over 12 innings.

Prior to the 2024 MLB season, Harrison ranked within the top half on most top-100 prospect lists, topping out as No. 23 on MLB.com's list heading into that season. While the lefty hasn't embarrassed himself in the majors yet, he hasn't lived up to those expectations either. The Brewers have a knack for getting the most out of their young pitchers, however, so this could be a great landing spot for Harrison.

The Brewers will also receive 27-year-old pitcher Shane Drohan and 28-year-old infielder David Hamilton in the deal. Hamilton is known more for his defensive ability and has hit just .222 since 2023. Drohan saw his strike-out rate soar in the minors last season, but was old for Triple-A and never got a chance in the majors with the Red Sox.

With the move, two of the key pieces acquired by the Red Sox in the Devers deal are no longer with the franchise. In addition to shipping out Harrison, theRed Sox also traded awaypitcher Jordan Hicks on Feb. 1. Hicks struggled mightily in limited work with the Red Sox following the Devers trade, posting an 8.20 ERA over 18 2/3 innings. The Red Sox were disappointed enough with that performance that they agreed to part with a better prospect since the Chicago White Sox covered a chunk of Hicks' salary moving forward.

Both the Brewers and Red Sox are expected to contend in 2026 after making the playoffs last season. Despite that, both teams still have a few glaring roster deficiencies. The Red Sox may have plugged one of those with Durbin. The Brewers, meanwhile, are engaging in a bit of a rebuild on the flyafter trading awayace Freddy Peralta earlier in the offseason.

The Durbin trade presents more questions in Milwaukee than answers, but the team has a strong recent track record of getting the most out of its young, unproven players. Harrison could be the next Brewers pitcher to take that leap, and the team does have a handful of impressive infield prospects who could replace Durbin's numbers before long.

Given Durbin's youth and low salary, the Brewers didn't need to make the move. The fact that they did speaks to the team's excitement about Harrison, and could be a sign it didn't see a higher ceiling for Durbin moving forward.

But Durbin has overcome the odds before. And if the Red Sox can further optimize his approach at the plate, there's potential for Durbin to develop into an extremely useful, well-rounded contributor in all facets of the game.

In late 2025, Whalen spoke with PEOPLE about his experiences in acting, including his time playing Merkin Burns, assistant to Barrymore's Josie Gellar, in the 1999 filmNever Been Kissed. Whalen lauded praise on Barrymore for her kindness and consideration in her first time producing a film.

On Feb. 4, the two enjoyed a chat as part ofThe Drew Barrymore Show's "Drew's News" segment. Panelist Ross Matthews told Barrymore about Whalen's kind words and she had nothing but kind things to say in return.

"Sean, he was a really amazing working actor and he was sort of everywhere at the time. He was a very hot person to be able to work alongside of, and then he was like a big muse to my partner Nan [Nancy Juvonen] and I, and we asked him to doCharlie's Angelsas well."

Barrymore explained how Whalen portrayed the passenger her character abducts off the plane in the opening scene ofCharlie's Angels,adding, "He's just someone that I loved being around. I think he's very funny and talented and I'm so glad that he remembers that."

Just then, Barrymore's on-set phone rings, with Whalen on the line for a chat. The daytime host thanked him for his kind words.

"I heard that you had said such nice things and that means so much to me because I always felt like we were in it together," she said. "We were just kids, you, me and Nan, trying to make fun, good movies together."

Whalen reiterated what it meant to him how she advocated for him on theNever Been Kissedset, adding, "I was blown away. I was just a young, goofy kid and you had no reason to do that."

"I was a young, goofy kid too! And you know, it all felt like such high stakes, those first chances where you have to prove yourself. And if it doesn't go honestly the right way, you really, in our job and in this industry, most likely don't get a second chance to do it."

Whalen says that Barrymore's approach has inspired him in how he handles cast and crew in his own directing and producing endeavors today.

"You have no understanding how it affected me. I'm directing now and producing, and my first film that I did, they got a crew for me, and I said, 'I'm gonna get the cast.' And just like you, I cast the right people and I went to every one of them and I said, 'I learned this from Drew Barrymore. I want you to bring me whatever you want to do. And I trust all of you.' "

He continued, "I said, the best comedy I ever worked on wasNever Been Kissedand I've never forgotten it. I've always let my actors bring what they want because you taught me that."
