Spain Copa del Rey Soccer

Pellegrino “Rino” Matarazzo led Sociedad to itsfourth Copa del Rey titleon Saturday with a penalty-shootout win over Atletico Madrid.

It was the first career title for the coach who left the United States to try to play soccer professionally and ended up becoming a manager in Germany.

“Just the feeling you have of ‘wow, wow, this happened, we did it, we did it,’" said Matarazzo, who in less than four months took Sociedad from near the relegation zone in the Spanish league to lifting the prestigious Copa del Rey trophy.

The New Jersey-born coach was hired in December when Sociedad was two points above the relegation zone. He guided it back to safety and to its title run in the Copa in what he called "an unbelievable journey."

“If you think about all the games that we played, every game has been very very special since I arrived and I think we finished with a very special game," the soft-spoken Matarazzo said. "Wow, wow...”

Matarazzo downplayed his role in the team's turnaround and credited his players' talent and character for the improvement and the title run in the Copa.

“I'm very grateful to be manager of this club, very very grateful,” Matarazzo said. “Being part of its history now is, of course, something special, and I'm also very grateful to have this team, these players, this staff, this club. It’s a product of the work we've done together in the past weeks.”

Italian roots

Matarazzo is from an Italian family whose parents met in the United States after emigrating to the country for work.

Matarazzo's first language was Italian before he went to school. He used to watch Serie A matches on a small television in his father's bedroom during the time that Argentina great Maradona played for Napoli.

In an interview with Sociedad's TV channel, Matarazzo said he was always passionate about soccer even though the sport was far from popular while he grew up in the United States.

Before moving to Germany to try to play, Matarazzo earned a degree in mathematics from Columbia University, which he said has helped him as a coach even though he knows that the job is about people and not just numbers.

Career in Germany

Matarazzo, a defender, first tried to play in Italy but ended returning to the United States after what he called broken promises by agents. He was then invited by a friend to go to Germany, where he moved in his early 20s without knowing a word of German. He ended up staying and working in the country for 25 years.

Matarazzo started playing in the fourth division and eventually moved into coaching with Nuremberg’s reserves and youth sides. He was an assistant to Julian Nagelsmann when both were at Hoffenheim in 2018, then landed the Stuttgart job in December 2019. He steered the club back to the Bundesliga at the first attempt and guided it to a commendable finish in his first top-flight season.

He was fired by Stuttgart in late 2022 and about four months later was hired by Hoffenheim, where he stayed until the end of 2024, when he was let go following a disappointing season.

Matarazzo got off to a great start in Spain, and he hoped it could be "just the beginning” of a long and successful stint for him and the club.

“I hope that we continue to stay ambitious because we still have seven games left in La Liga and we can do more,” he said. “I'm not done yet, and hopefully we are not done yet.”

What to know about singer D4vd's arrest in 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez's killing

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Seven months after a 14-year-old girl’s body wasfound in D4vd’s towed SUV, the alt-pop singer has beenarrested on suspicion of killing her, authorities said.

D4vd-Arrest-What to Know

Detectives arrested the 21-year-old, whose legal name is David Burke, on Thursday on suspicion of murder in the investigation of the killing of Celeste Rivas Hernandez, Los Angeles police said. Authorities had not publicly named Burke as a suspect until his arrest. Investigators are expected to present a case to prosecutors on Monday, police said. Burke’s lawyers have declared his innocence.

Here are a few things to know about the case:

Singer was arrested, but is not currently charged

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement that it is aware of the arrest and its Major Crimes Division will review the case to determine whether there is enough evidence to file charges.

Defense attorneys Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski and Regina Peter stressed that Burke has only been detained under suspicion, no indictment had been returned and no criminal complaint has been filed.

“Let us be clear — the actual evidence in this case will show that David Burke did not murder Celeste Rivas Hernandez and he was not the cause of her death,” the defense lawyers said. “We will vigorously defend David’s innocence.”

Celeste Rivas Hernandez was reported missing at age 13

The seventh grader’s family reported her missing in 2024 from her hometown of Lake Elsinore, about 70 miles (112 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles. Her long-dead body was found in an apparently abandoned Tesla Model Y towed from an upscale Hollywood Hills neighborhood on Sept. 8, a day after she would have turned 15. Authorities give her age as 14 when she was killed in court documents.

Police investigators searching the Tesla in a tow yard found a cadaver bag “covered with insects and a strong odor of decay,” court documents said, and “detectives partially unzipped the bag and observed a decomposed head and torso.” Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office investigators “discovered the arms and legs had been severed from the body,” according to court documents. Dismembered body parts were found inside a second black bag beneath the first. No cause of death has been publicly revealed.

Police in November had blocked the coroner’s office from publicly releasing the autopsy’s findings.

Singer popular with Gen Z for indie rock, R&B and lo-fi pop blend

D4vd, pronounced “David,” went viral on TikTok in 2022 with the hit “Romantic Homicide,” which peaked at No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. After signing with Darkroom and Interscope Records D4vd released his debut EP “Petals to Thorns” and a follow-up, “The Lost Petals,” in 2023.

He was on tour supporting his first full-length album, “Withered,” when Rivas Hernandez’s body was found. The last two North American shows, in San Francisco and Los Angeles, along with a scheduled performance at LA’s Grammy Museum, were canceled, as was the European tour that was to have begun in Norway.

Secret grand jury investigation revealed after singer’s family objects to testifying

The singer had been under investigation by an Los Angeles County grand jury looking into the death of Rivas Hernandez. The probe's existence — and thedesignation of D4vd as its target— was revealed when his mother, father and brother filed an objection in a Texas court to subpoenas demanding they testify. The Associated Press obtained documents in the case in February that had been sealed in California, where the grand jury investigation had been kept secret. The 2023 Tesla Model Y was registered in the singer’s name at the Texas address of his subpoenaed family members, according to court filings from prosecutors.

The status of the grand jury investigation wasn’t immediately clear but Burke’s attorneys noted no indictment has been returned.

As Russia's attacks continue, Ukrainian musicians see work as resistance and refuge

LONDON -- It was a "sleepless night," said Daria Kolomiec, a Ukrainian cultural activist, performer and DJ based in Kyiv. Explosions were happening around her apartment as she sheltered in the bathroom. Earlier on Wednesday evening she attended a concert in Kyiv by the band DakhTrio.

ABC News

"Even when the air raid alert started the concert continued," she said on Thursday. "Sitting there I felt like there could be a massive attack, but I just needed to spend time with people."

Air raid sirens echoed in cities across the country overnight into Thursday morning, forecastingdeadly Russian attacksthat have, according to Ukrainian officials, killed at least sixteen and injured more than a hundred others.

Amid that strike andhundredsof similar overnight Russian aerial attacks, new and traditional Ukrainian music has become for many a sort-of counterpoint to the sirens that blare around the country nearly every night, several musicians who work in Ukraine told ABC News.

'Massive' Russian attack on Ukraine kills 16, injures at least 100, Ukrainian officials say

Almost 300 miles away from Kolomiec in Kyiv lies Odesa, Ukraine’s third most populous city, located by the Black Sea. It was also targeted in Thursday’s massive Russian strike, officials said.

Hobart Earle is conductor of the city’s Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra. Throughout the war they have continued to play, even after the orchestra’s concert hall was damaged in January 2025. Three ballistic missiles fired from Russian-occupied Crimea directly hit the nearby Hotel Bristol. The shock shattered the concert hall’s stained-glass windows and the main door was blown off its hinges.

“That door survived the Russian Revolution, the Civil War, the Second World War, and everything Mother Nature had to throw at it, but the force of this missile blast was too much,” Earle said.

Courtesy of the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra - PHOTO: Hobart Earle is seen in an undated image supplied by the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra.

The orchestra was set to perform that evening. With less than six hours' notice, Earle moved the concert to the Odesa Conservatory.

“The place was full to the rafters. It was a very symbolic moment because it showed that people really do need music. When times are tough, that is when the arts are needed more by people. Music is transformed by war,” Earle continued.

During Thursday's attacks, the Conservatory's student accommodation was hit by a Russian drone, wounding five, officials said.

Earle’s sentiment was echoed by Kyiv-based electronic musician SI Process, or Stanislav Ivashchenko. He created the track"Kyiv Future"during the winter of 2025 when Russian strikes hit critical energy infrastructure leaving Ukrainians freezing, without electricity or heating.

“I wrote it on the last charge of my laptop, which is why it carries a certain ‘dark-groove of our lives,’” he said. “Creating in such conditions is incredibly difficult, but there’s also a clear sense of how unique this moment is.”

Yuri Gryaznov courtesy of Stanislav Ivashchenko - PHOTO: Stanislav Ivashchenko is seen at Origin Stage in Kyiv, Ukraine, on November 21, 2025, in this photo supplied by the artist.

When the war broke out with Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Kolomiec knew she needed to stay connected with friends. In apartments across the city, they have in the years since gathered and played Ukrainian songs both new and old -- “this is how I stay mentally okay.”

Musical events of all kinds, from informal gatherings to electronic music festivals to classical concerts, carry an “important mission,” said Ivashchenko, “to bring people together, to offer a sense of mental return to normal life, and of course, to support our soldiers. Every festival raises funds for aid.”

But the harsh realities of war are never far as events sometimes are paused during air raid alerts when people move to shelters. There are also many musicians who are fighting on the front line.

Ukraine outshoots Russia in cross-border drone war for 1st time, March data suggests

On the night of the 15th, DakhTrio performed musical arrangements of words by Ukrainian poets. Kolomiec said a setting of a poem by Vasyl Stus felt particularly relevant. Stus died in 1985 in the Russian Perm-36 labour camp, where he had been imprisoned for anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda.

His work focused on Ukrainian identity in the face of Soviet repression: “There is a fight; I’m on the battlefield, / Where all my soldiers are the words I wield,” Stus wrote, according to a version translated by Artem Pulemotov.

“Creating music in Ukrainian was not only discouraged but dangerous” Kolomiec said.

Earle premiered"Up in Flames"by Ukrainian composer Eduard Resatsch in early 2024. These five symphonic songs are set to poetry by Ukrainian poet Lina Kostenko. The fifth song describes Russian President Vladimir Putin as “the Loch Ness of the cold Neva,” Earle said, the Neva being the main river flowing through St. Petersburg.

Earle also recently premiered Resatsch’s"Nadiya,"which translates to "Hope." He will conduct its second performance in Kyiv on April 24. Elements of the piece could draw comparisons to the everyday sounds of living in a warzone -- when asked whether listeners could hear sweeping musical motifs as air raid sirens, Earle agreed.

Courtesy of the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra - PHOTO: Hobart Earle is seen researching with the Odesa Philharmonic Orchestra in an undated image provided by the orchestra.

Some music has been recontextualized by the war. Violinist Stepan Andrushchenko is co-founder of modern folk band ShchukaRyba, he described how traditional Ukrainian folk songs which were once “heard simply as beautiful songs, now sound extremely relevant and almost describe today’s reality directly.”

“There Stands a Steep Mountain” is one such folk tune:

I will go to the steep mountains, I will cry there alone,

I will ask the falcon,I will ask the grey falcon:

Have you seen my beloved?

After the start of the war, Andrushchenko noticed many Ukrainians wanted to reconnect with their roots. Music, particularly folk music, could provide the sense of belonging many were searching for, and an answer to the ever-present questions, he said, including “What are we fighting for? What are we defending?” His band believe “tradition should stay alive,” he said, “We want people not only to listen but to join in.”

Amidst the sounds of war, through music, some measure of hope can be found, artists who spoke with ABC News said. There’s a Ukrainian saying, Earle said, “Hope dies last.”

Even if Russia destroys Ukrainian sovereignty, Kolomiec said, "the songs will stay."

‘Buffy’ star Nicholas Brendon allegedly ‘groomed’ teenager years before his death

Nicholas Brendon allegedly “groomed” a teenager years beforehis deathat 54.

Page Six

In an exclusive interview with Page Six, the now-30-year-old woman — whom we will refer to as Jane Doe 1 — detailed for the first time her alleged experience with the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star following his March 20 death.

“When I heard the news that he died, I cried out of pure relief,” Doe 1 — who is among the almost 9,000 members of a Nicholas Brendon Awareness Facebook group, where alleged victims share their stories and exchange resources — told us.

Doe 1, who currently resides in Virginia but previously lived in South Carolina, said she met Brendon at Awesome Con in Washington, DC, in April 2013 when she was 17.

“I have always wanted to be an actor growing up,” she explained. “So any time I went to a [fan] convention, I saw it as a time to help market myself a little bit and be around people I saw as peers.”

Nicholas Brendon, pictured above in a 2025 Instagram video, has been accused of grooming a teenager years before his death at 54. nicholasbrendon/Instagram Doe 1 told Page Six she met the late actor (seen here at the 2012 Monster Mania Convention in New Jersey) at Awesome Con in Washington, DC, in April 2013 when she was 17. According to Doe 1, Brendon — who was 42 at the time — gave her “the biggest hug” she had ever experienced.

“I was like, ‘Hey, I’m an actor. Can I give you my number? Like, can you help me out?'” she recalled telling him.

“He seemed all for it, and I was like, ‘Awesome!’ So we started texting, and it got flirty,” she alleged as she thought to herself, “I’m 17, talking to f–king Xander from ‘Buffy.’ Wow.”

Doe 1 was admittedly “smitten as s–t.”

“I remember he was at this ski or snowboarding resort, and it was cold, and he was talking about flying me there so we could cuddle and keep warm together,” Doe 1 claimed, noting that Brendon “didn’t start off asking for nudes right away” but eventually allegedly did.

“I was like, ‘Bro, I’m 17.’ I was stupid enough to be like, ‘I don’t want you to get in trouble for having nudes of a 17-year-old on your phone.’ And he goes, ‘It’s OK, you’re the age of consent. Just send me the nudes.’ He actually looked up the age of consent [in South Carolina].”

Describing herself as “an artist at heart,” Doe 1 told us she “tried to take tasteful nudes” by “covering up the goodies with a scarf.”

“So I was sending them and sending him those, and he goes, ‘That’s not enough. I want to see all of you,'” she alleged. “And I was like, ‘I’m not comfortable with that.’ And he goes, ‘I’m famous. I’m giving you attention. You should be doing what I ask you to do.'”

Doe 1 claimed she “tried to appease him a couple more times” before the actor “ghosted” her less than six months after meeting.

“I was absolutely f–king devastated,” she confessed as she began to cry, adding, “I thought I was going to be able to date this man and that he was going to help me.”

Doe 1 said the alleged experience affected her romantic relationships down the line and that she found herself giving men whatever they wanted because she “didn’t want to be rejected the way [Brendon] rejected [her].”

As a college student, her perspective on the situation was that Brendon was “just another d–khead guy who tried to take advantage of [her].”

But in September 2024, Doe 1 came across a TikTok posted by Brendon’s ex-girlfriend Sarah Allison, who also served as a career assistant during their time together.

Following the end of their personal and working relationship, Allison became an advocate for domestic violence survivors via her“Slay the Silence” account. (Shehas repeatedly accused Brendon of addiction-fueled abuse toward her and others. Though he never addressed her claims, he didhave multiple run-ins with the law, including separate instances involving domestic violence and drug-related charges.)

“That’s what got me back into therapy,” Doe 1 told us of watching Allison’s video, noting that she soon came to understand that Brendon was not just a guy who had broken her heart.

“I really reflected and realized, ‘Oh, I was really groomed. This was worse than I had thought it was,'” she recalled. (By definition, grooming occurs when a personmethodically builds a trusting relationship with a child, young person or adult who may be vulnerablein order tomanipulate, coerce or force them to engage in sexual activities. It can take place online or in person, and it can happen over a short or long period of time — from days to years.)

Doe 1 said she soon connected with Allison, who invited her to join the Facebook support group.

“It made me feel not alone. It made me feel better that I was — this sounds s–tty, but this was not something I wanted to be special in,” Doe 1 told us, lamenting that she “couldn’t have spoken out any sooner” because it took her so long to “process” what had allegedly happened to her.

“I feel sad I couldn’t have done more. I feel bad for everybody. I try not to do the trauma comparison because trauma isn’t a competition, but I feel bad for people who had it worse than me. As my friend pointed out, thank God he never actually got his hands on me because what would that have looked like?”

Doe 1 went on, “Part of the other reason why I’m so happy he is dead is because I was hearing [rumors] that he was bouncing between Virginia and California, and I live in Virginia. So I was living in this constant fear of, ‘Holy s–t, am I ever gonna run into him?'”

Doe 1 claimed she “tried to appease him a couple more times” before he “ghosted” her less than six months after meeting. “I was absolutely f–king devastated,” she confessed as she began to cry, adding, “I thought I was going to be able to date this man and that he was going to help me.” Brendon is pictured above in a Season 5 “Buffy” promo. ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection

Though Doe 1 “felt a little bad celebrating” Brendon’s death, she explained that she’s “tired of bad people getting put on a pedestal just because they happen to do something that we literally all do.

“Yeah, we all die. It’s not special. It is not a special occurrence. So why does he deserve accolades and grace now that he’s dead? He’s not special just because he died.”

Page Six spoke with another member of the Nicholas Brendon Awareness group, who also allegedly had direct dealings with the TV personality.

Jane Doe 2, a middle school teacher in Kansas, told us she befriended Allison during the latter’s relationship with Brendon. Though the alleged abuse in their relationship “was well underway” by that point, Doe 2 insisted she did not learn about it until later.

During the COVID-19 pandemic when people were forced to quarantine, Doe 2 said, she invited Brendon to participate as a guest on her read-aloud YouTube series.

Doe 1 credited Brendon’s ex-girlfriend Sarah Allison, who advocates for domestic violence survivors, with helping her work through the alleged trauma. The former couple is seen here. Sarah Allison/Facebook Jane Doe 2 told Page Six she once asked Brendon to sign her “Buffy” board game, to which he allegedly replied, “I’ve got dirty thoughts running through my head right now.” Page Six

“He was a train wreck. He could barely read,” Doe 2 claimed, theorizing that Brendon — who went to rehab multiple times during his life — was likely drunk or high.

“He was so awkward and even made a rape joke during the live!” she alleged. “This was something that I did through my school district account and was, like, promoting it, you know what I mean? I was just horrified.”

Doe 2 added that when she asked Brendon to sign her “Buffy” board game, he allegedly replied, “I’ve got dirty thoughts running through my head right now.”

He then grabbed a Sharpie, circled Angelus’ Mansion — a “Buffy” show reference — and allegedly wrote, “Only go here if you like f–king children.” She provided Page Six with a picture of the signed game.

“I have never heard of or seen any other celebrity giving access the way he did to fans,” Doe 2 told us, slamming Brendon’s “desperation” to make a few bucks while keeping his ego stroked.

She also emphasized that he portrayed a beloved character on a popular series, which she believes makes his alleged actions as a real person that much harder for fans to accept.

She opined, “I think people were and are fiercely protective of him because he was always sort of like this sweet broken puppy that you just wanted to help and save.”

Reps for Brendon did not immediately respond to Page Six’s requests for comment on Jane Doe 1 and 2’s allegations.

When his family announced his death, they described him as “a man who lived with intensity, imagination and heart.”

They also referenced “those who truly knew him” while acknowledging that his “struggles” were “no secret.”

While the familyinsisted that Brendon “passed in his sleep of natural causes,”a cause of death has yet to be released by the Indiana coroner handling the case.

Ludvig Aberg sets pace at RBC Heritage with sterling 63

Ludvig Aberg of Sweden posted an 8-under-par 63 to take the first-round lead at the RBC Heritage on Thursday in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Field Level Media

At the post-Masters signature event at Harbour Town Golf Links, which features a $20 million purse and no 36-hole cut, Aberg is hunting for his first win since February 2025.

"To me, this week is more about sort of mentally being ready, mentally being charged coming off a couple of tough weeks," Aberg said. "But hopefully I'll be ready to go this weekend, as well."

Aberg made five of his eight birdies on the back nine and stayed bogey-free. He holed a 16-foot birdie putt at the par-3 17th to reach 8 under.

By day's end, he ranked fourth in the field in both strokes gained on approach and strokes gained putting.

"I felt like the highlight for me was definitely my irons and my approach play," Aberg said. "I felt like that was really positive. Felt like I was hitting the flights I was trying to do. I was on the correct side of the flags, those kind of things that I really like to see. Then a few putts went in on the back nine that I didn't really do on the front."

Aberg is up a shot on Harris English and Norway's Viktor Hovland, while a six-way tie at 6-under 65 includes Rickie Fowler, Gary Woodland, Andrew Novak, Michael Brennan, England's Matt Fitzpatrick and New Zealand's Ryan Fox.

English and Hovland also turned in bogey-free cards, with Hovland crediting his up-and-downs more so than any particular birdie.

"I hit some really nice chip shots today, especially on 10. It was a nice up-and-down there," Hovland said. "Making a par on 12, I hit it left, which is pretty dead; making an up-and-down there was pretty nice."

Brennan led the field with 16 of 18 greens in regulation and Novak holed more than 81 feet of putts. Novak lost to Justin Thomas in a playoff at this event last year.

Fowler, a longtime fan favorite, has won just once on tour this decade and not since July 2023. He's in position for a run after limiting himself to one bogey against seven birdies, including five in his first seven holes.

"I think it was probably more so between the ears," Fowler said. "Really didn't have great stuff the last few days and just put some time in to try and get into a better spot. Had a nice warm-up this morning. Really just tried to slow things down and get into a better rhythm, more consistent contact and flight."

The group at 5-under 66 featured Daniel Berger, Robert MacIntyre of Scotland, Sepp Straka of Austria and Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim of South Korea.

From backlash to Pacific title: The Golden Knights’ Tortorella gamble paying off so far

LAS VEGAS (AP) — General manager Kelly McCrimmon was walking away from the Golden Knights' locker room Monday night after avictory over the Jets, but he could have easily reversed course and done a victory lap in front of the assembled media.

McCrimmon probably would say it's too early to celebrate because the NHL playoffs have yet to begin, and that will be the true measure of how successful Vegas' season is viewed.

But it's difficult to argue his controversial decision March 29 tofire popular and successful coach Bruce Cassidyand hireJohn Tortorellahasn't worked out.

Going into its playoff opener at home Sunday against Utah, Vegas is 7-0-1 under the fiery coach known as Torts. A team struggling to hang on to a playoff spot just wonthe Pacific Divisionfor the fifth time in their nine years.

Top center Jack Eichel, who had 90 points for the second consecutive season, said Tortorella injected confidence in a team that was lacking it just three years afterwinning the Stanley Cup.

“Sometimes you need a reminder,” Eichel said. “He saw we have a really good hockey team in here and we need to believe in ourselves and in each other. That's the first step to being a great hockey team is believing in ourselves. I think you've started to see that the last few weeks. We started to build more confidence in each other and our game.”

The 67-year-old Tortorella, who led the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Stanley Cup title in 2004, said at his introductory news conference that he wouldn't overload the team with information and make massive changes. It's a strategy he's stuck to since then.

“I knew it was a good team coming in,” Tortorella said this week. “I know it was coached well prior to me. I had some points of emphasis, probably three or four, that I want to bring across to them. We've done that. I think they feel good about themselves. When you win some games, you feel good about yourself, and hopefully we keep on building on that.”

Tortorella made two notable changes that have worked.

One was to create a more aggressive north-south game. Vegas went from scoring 3.12 goals per game and allowing 3.07 to outscoring opponents on average 4.13 to 1.88.

“Attack the games. Put pressure on the other team,” Eichel said.

The other move was to go with Carter Hart as his primary goalie. Cassidy installed Adin Hill in that role down the stretch, but Tortorella coached Hart in Philadelphia and has spoken glowingly about him. Tortorella said Hart was carrying the Flyers into contender status in 2024 before he was suspended by the NHL as one of five 2018 Canada world junior hockey players accused in a high-profile sexual assault case.

Theywere acquittedlast July. The league reinstated those players beginning Dec. 1 and the Golden Knightsgave Hart a chance. He has delivered under Tortorella's watch, going 6-0 with a .930 save percentage and a 1.66 goals-against average.

“I think he looks dialed in,” Tortorella said. “I just think he's making saves. He just looks confident, and hopefully that'll continue. I think Hilly's last couple of starts, he's made some really good saves also. So going into the playoffs, if both of them are going well, that's a good thing for us.”

McCrimmon said the decision to fire Cassidy was a difficult one, especially since the coach was responsible for the organization's only Stanley Cup and they were consistently on the same page. But the GM said the season and its playoff chances appeared to be slipping away and there was little time to wait. He knew the decision would be criticized but that wasn't the point.

“When we've changed coaches along the way — I'm going to say each time — it was likely viewed in this room as being unpopular or not the right time,” McCrimmon said March 30 at a news conference. “And I think in each case, the decisions were good ones.”

The decisions to fire Gerard Gallant in 2020, Pete DeBoer in 2022 and Cassidy this year — all with winning playoff records — were met with wide skepticism but management largely got the results they desired.

That includes with Tortorella, but the postseason is coming.

Then the true verdict will be delivered.

So the victory lap is on hold — for now.
