'The Rookie' character's death in Season 8 has fans, actor conflicted

Monica Stevens finally got her comeuppance on the latest episode of "The Rookie." But not all fans are celebrating.

The crooked lawyer, played by Bridget Regan, on ABC's police procedural series, died in the penultimate episode of Season 8 in a dramatic cliffhanger ahead of next week's finale.

After double-crossing dangerous criminals, the corrupt attorney met her demise as she was assassinated during a rideshare trip to the airport, where she hoped to leave Los Angeles and avoid federal agents.

"I think you missed the turn," Monica told the driver, who replied, "No, I didn't." She is taken to an abandoned site at night, where her final request of "not in the face" is honored, and she is fatally shot twice in the chest.

Bridget Regan as Monica Stevens on Season 8 Episode 18 of "The Rookie," which aired on April 27, 2026.

Monica Stevens heartbreaking goodbye with Wesley Evers

Before her fatal shooting, she visited ex-fiancé Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore), the only person Monica cared to say goodbye to. The two shared a devastating exchange with Monica knowing it would be their last.

"I know I did exactly whatever I wanted, and I own every choice that I made, and yet I don't know how I got here," she told Wesley.

Monica asked him if he ever loved the person she used to be, to which he replied: "She was terrifying and radiant and razor sharp. Of course, I loved her. Everybody did."

Despite her immoral decisions on the series, fans found her ending ironically bittersweet, withone X user writing,"Never thought I would feel bad for Monica but I do. Monica really loved Wesley and you saw the person she used to be before he broke her heart. Her saying goodbye before she met her end was really heartbreaking."

"omg Monica i wanted u gone but im sad rn,"another user wrote on X.

Bridget Regan is 'sad to see Monica go'

Regan, who joined "The Rookie" in a recurring role in Season 5, said she will miss playing the morally questionable antagonist, tellingTV Insiderthat "I am sad to see Monica go."

She recounted her phone call with showrunner Alexi Hawley, where, as usual, she worried "that it's the call of death."

"But truly, I was not surprised. I was thrilled that she lasted as long as she did. If you play with fire, as long as she has, eventually you’re going to get burned. And as I said to Alexi and everybody, I was like, she’s not on her ninth life. She’s on her 37th," she told the outlet.

She said it was "fair enough" for the writers to kill the character, who already had survived multiple assassinations and prison time, and "being thrown in a wood chipper."

"When her number was finally up, I wasn’t surprised. I thought, fair enough. She’s had an amazing run, four years on this show. I’m only filled with gratitude," she continued. "But what I was surprised by was just how incredibly sad I was for her. Not that she died, but that she never truly flipped, that she actually succumbed to the dark side and couldn’t find her way back."

The Season 8 finale of "The Rookie" is set to air Monday, May 4. The series has been renewed for Season 9, which, according toDeadline, makes ABC's third-longest-running drama series after "NYPD Blue" and "Grey's Anatomy."

Jimmy Kimmel calls out Donald Trump for similarly joking about his own death: 'You should be fired for that!'

  • Trump joked to his wife, Melania, that the length of their marriage would not be able to surpass his parents' 63-year-long record in a televised speech on Tuesday.

  • “Wait a minute, did he just make a joke about his death? My God. You should be fired for that!” Kimmel quipped.

Jimmy Kimmelis calling outDonald Trumpfor cracking a joke about his mortality just one day after the presidentpublicly called for the late-night host to be firedfor a similar punchline.

The 79-year-old president made headlines on Tuesday when hepaused in the middle of a televised speech at the White Houseto jokingly inform his wife,Melania Trump, 56, that they likely wouldn’t beat his parents’ 63-year-long marriage record.

"And, uh, excuse me, if you don't mind, that's a record we won't be able to match, darling,” Trump said, drawing laughs from those onstage. “I’m sorry, it's just not going to work out that way. We'll do well, but we're not going to do that well.”

One person who wasn’t laughing? Kimmel, who addressed the president’s age-related joke in his opening monologue on Tuesday night. “Wait a minute, did he just make a joke about his death?” the host questioned. “My God. You should be fired for that!”

He continued, “Only Donald Trump would demand I be fired for making a joke about his old age and then a day later, go out and make a joke about his own old age!”

Trump demanded that Disney and ABC fire Kimmel in the wake of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting because, days before the incident occurred, Kimmelhosted his own mock version of the event onJimmy Kimmel Live, where he teased that the First Lady had “a glow like an expectant widow.”

Melania similarlydenounced the quip in a rare X post in the aftermath of the incident, stating that “Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoricis intended to divide our country” and requesting that ABC “take a stand.”

Kimmeladdressed the Trumps’ remarks on Monday’s episode ofJimmy Kimmel Live, sharing his relief that “no one was hurt” at the event and explaining the joke to them.

"It was a very light roast joke about the fact that [Trump] is almost 80 and she's younger than I am,” he said. “It was not by any stretch of the definition a call to assassination, and they know that I've been very vocal for many years speaking out against gun violence in particular."

He added, “I am sorry that you and the president and everyone in that room on Saturday went through that. I really am. Just because no one get got killed doesn't mean it wasn't traumatic and scary. We should come together andbe best. We really should.”

One day after the president called for Kimmel’s dismissal, the Federal Communications Commission, which is headed by Trump appointee Brendan Carr, ordered the Walt Disney Company to submit early renewals of its TV stations. The company must now file the renewals, which were previously scheduled to be renewed between 2028 and 2031, for all of its stations within the next 30 days.

Several celebrities have come forward to defend Kimmel following the backlash he's received over the joke, including Gayle King, whoreacted to the situation on Monday’s episode ofCBS Mornings.“Jimmy Kimmel is not some crazy person who would wish the president to be killed," she insisted. "That's... he just would not do that."

George Clooneyalso spoke out about the "heated" controversy while attending the 51st Chaplin Award Gala. “When one side is calling anyone they disagree with traitors to the country, which is a charge that’s punishable by death, just because they don’t agree with someone, I think the rhetoric is a little too heated,” he said.

Watch Kimmel react to Trump's punchline in the clip above.

The teams will play again on May 5 in Mexico, with the aggregate winner qualifying for the single-match final on May 30.

Correa scored his 23rd goal of the season across all competitions on a volley from distance that went off the hand of goalkeeper Brian Schwake. Nashville struggled to clear a loose ball at the top of the box, and Correa capitalized.

It was the first away goal allowed by Nashville in the tournament.

Schwake made a nice kick save of Juan Brunetta’s close-range shot in the 30th.

Nashville, which was without Sam Surridge due to a back injury, appeared to take a 1-0 lead in the sixth but it was called back for an offside.

The match was delayed about an hour due to the weather.
