When former New York Giants' placekicker Younghoe Koo completelymissed the ballon a field goal attempt against the New England Patriots last December, the broadcasters weren't the only ones laughing.

Mark Toothaker, a stallion sales manager for Spendthrift Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, was on the couch cracking up with his wife, Malory, about the whiffed field goal and consequential turnover.

Then, he felt something strange.

"I felt a shock in my left arm, and then I never felt anything else. Had no pain, anything after that," Toothaker said.

He didn't wake up for 25 minutes and was told at the hospital that he suffered a seizure.

Doctors also revealed the shocking news that he had a brain tumor the size of a tennis ball.

Luckily, his wife Malory is a nurse.

"Just happened at absolutely the right place if it had to happen," Toothaker said. "I could have died, I mean, I'm on the road all the time."

The tumor was benign, and Toothaker was home from the hospital after a whirlwind 24 hours.

But as he prepared forthis year's Kentucky Derby, where he was hoping to be in the winner's circle with Spendthrift's horse, Further Ado, he still thought about Koo, and the whiff that led to the tumor's discovery.

Toothaker reached out to the kicker, who made the Pro Bowl and led the NFL in points with Atlanta in 2020.

"I'd love to have him come to the races, or come visit Spendthrift," Toothaker said prior to Saturday's race. "If he wants to go racing, we'll go racing. If he wants to come out and see the mares and foals, it'd be my honor to come out and show him around this beautiful farm that we have here in Lexington, Kentucky."

Further Ado ultimately finished Saturday's Derby in 11th place.

Can Lakers beat the Thunder? What we learned from series vs. Rockets

LeBron Jamesand theLos Angeles Lakersbounced back in a big way to avoid playing Game 7 of their Western Conference first-round series against theHouston Rockets.

USA TODAY Sports

James had 28 points, eight assists and seven rebounds asthe Lakers beat the Rockets 98-78on Friday, May 1. It was his league-record 157th playoff game with at least 25 points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Lakers played with a sense of urgency and energy that was missing from their home loss on Wednesday.

“My mindset was to play with aggression,” James said during a postgame interview on Prime. “(The Rockets) changed the aggression level in Games 4 and 5. … Most of our guys haven't been in a close-out game situation. … So I had to come out and set the tone for my team and just try to find a way to close this thing out.”

The Lakers will be asked to produce the same level of energy if they want to compete with the defending champions, theOklahoma City Thunder, in the second round.

The Lakers must continue to get strong contributions from players such as Rui Hachimura, who helped neutralize the Rockets and kept them from having any chance of battling back into the game with several big shots. Hachimura finished with 21 points and six rebounds. He shot 5-of-7 from the 3-point line.

The Lakers will need all the rest they can get before the series with the Thunder begins on Tuesday, May 5, in Oklahoma City. The three days off won’t be enough time to get guard Luka Doncic back, though.

Doncic has not played since suffering a hamstring injury on April 2 in a blowout loss to the Thunder during the regular season.

Without the guard, Los Angeles will be tasked with overcoming the Thunder's defense and finding a way to generate enough offense to match the likes of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Austin Reaves will be asked to shoulder some of that offensive responsibility. He made his return to the Lakers on Wednesday for Game 5 after missing time due to a left oblique muscle strain. He returned to the starting lineup in Game 6.

Reaves has 37 points, eight assists and seven rebounds combined in his first two games back. He will need to round back into form at the 3-point line, where he's made just 2-of-12 this week.

The Thunder will enter the series well-rested, having swept the Phoenix Suns. OKC will enter the second round having had a full week off.

The Thunder could also see the return of Jalen Williams in the series. He has not played since April 22 due to a hamstring strain.

Bayern Munich avoids surprise loss to last-place Heidenheim in Bundesliga before PSG visits

BERLIN (AP) — Bayern Munich scored with the last kick of the game to salvage a 3-3 draw with last-place Heidenheim in the Bundesliga before it welcomes Paris Saint-Germain for the second leg of their Champions League semifinal.

Germany Bundesliga Soccer

Michael Olise struck the post for Bayern and the ball bounced off Heidenheim goalkeeper Diant Ramaj’s back into the net for the equalizer in the 10th minute of stoppage time on Saturday.

It was the third straight game that Bayern trailed at halftime, including its 5-4 loss to PSG in the first leg of their semifinal on Tuesday, and last weekend’s 4-3 win in Mainz, where the already crowned Bundesliga champion faced a three-goal deficit.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany made seven changes to the team that started against PSG with Manuel Neuer, Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich, Michael Olise, Luis Díaz and Harry Kane all on the substitutes’ bench.

Heidenheim’s Budu Zivzivadze and Eren Dinkci scored before Leon Goretzka pulled one back with a free kick before the break, and Kompany sent on Kane, Díaz, Olise and Kimmich for the second half.

Goretzka leveled with his second goal in the 57th, Zivzivadze scored again to restore Heidenheim’s lead in the 76th, only for Olise to force the equalizer.

The draw leaves Heidenheim on the verge of relegation.

Other games

Union Berlin fought back to draw 2-2 with Cologne for its first point under new coach Marie-Louise Eta, the first female head coach in the league.

Tom Rothe pulled one back after a corner in the 73rd and substitute Livan Burcu let fly for what seemed for the home fans like a winner in the 89th, after Marius Bülter and Said El Mala had scored for Cologne.

The draw kept Union a point above Cologne and will probably be enough for survival.

Hoffenheim drew with Stuttgart 3-3 in their duel for Champions League qualification, and Hamburger SV won 2-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt to move a point above Union.

Augsburg won 3-1 at Werder Bremen.

Bayer Leverkusen was hosting Leipzig later for another duel with Champions League qualification at stake.

Cadillac Championship final round moved up due to forecast

The final round of the Cadillac Championship was moved up to a 7:30 a.m. ET start with groups teeing off from the Nos. 1 and 10 holes due to Sunday's forecast in Miami calling for heavy thunderstorms and rain.

Field Level Media

Formula 1's Miami Grand Prix also moved up the start of its race from 4 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Cameron Young holds a six-shot lead entering the final round at Trump National Doral's Blue Monster Course following a 2-under-par 70 on Saturday that put him at 15 under for the tournament. The fifth elevated event of the season features a $20 million purse.

Young will tee off in the final group at 9:42 a.m. along with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and South Korea's Si Wo Kim, who are tied for second along with Norway's Kristoffer Reitan at 9 under.

"I think I tend to play well at difficult golf courses, difficult setups, difficult conditions," Young said after completing a third round that featured significantly more wind than the first 36 holes. "This is all of those things. I think it plays into my hands a little bit."

Young will be looking for his second victory of the season and the third of his career on the PGA Tour during Sunday's final round.

"I'm sure it will not be as easy as I want it to be," Young said. "Sounds like the weather is not going to be great. It will be a fight from the beginning and just looking to execute the way that I did for the most part today."

Scheffler shot 69 to move to second place by the time he finished the third round.

"The tournament's in (Young's) hands right now," Scheffler said. "I can go out and have a really good round, and if he has another really good round he's going to be a tough guy to catch."

Melissa Etheridge was ‘horrified’ when magazine changed her ‘girlfriend’ quote to ‘boyfriend’ before she came out

Melissa Etheridge blasts a journalist who "changed every pronoun I used" in a 1992 interview.

Key Points

  • When the magazine was published, the singer was "horrified" to see her "girlfriend" had become a "boyfriend."

  • Etheridge ultimately decided to come out soon after in January 1993.

Just asMelissa Etheridgewas ready to come out, a journalist nearly pushed her further into the closet.

Months before the rockerannounced, “I’m very proud to have been a lesbian all my life,” at the Triangle Ball in January 1993, she was on the cover ofMusic Expressmagazine.

Although she spoke openly in the interview, when the issue was published she was shocked to see “he changed every pronoun that I used,” Etheridge recalled toGood CharlotteguitaristBenji Maddenon theArtist Friendlypodcast. “He changed it to my ‘boyfriend,’ and it horrified me.”

At the time, “the gay community was really strong, but it was underground,” she explained. “And I’m like, ‘Oh my god, they’re going to think that I did this.’”

The betrayal inspired Etheridge to make a bold statement about her sexuality.

Her original strategy was to come out on theArsenio Hall Showto coincide with the September 1993 release of her fourth album,Yes I Am. But after working on the Bill Clinton–Al Gore campaign, when she was around “powerful gay leaders,” she expedited the plan to Jan. 20 at the Triangle Ball, the gay-themed celebration ofPresident Clinton’s inauguration.

Standing onstage beside singerk.d. lang, who publicly came out in 1992, Etheridge acknowledged her “sister” was her inspiration.

“And I’m very proud to say right here, I’m very proud to have been a lesbian all my life,” she said.

Looking back at the moment three decades later, “I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to be truthful to myself and speak about it,” Etheridge told Madden. “It comes back to me constantly.”

Early in her career, when her self-titled debut album came out in 1988, the singer’s sexuality was “an unspoken thing” with fans. At her concerts, “my first two rows would be women losing their minds,” she recalled. “And I’m like, ‘I don’t know…’”

By the time of her 1992 album,Never Enough, alternative music was sweeping the nation. The grunge scene’s uniform, flannel, was already a staple in Etheridge’s wardrobe, and the trend also helped ease her out of the proverbial closet.

“I’ve been wearing flannel for a long time,” she told Madden, “and I hear ‘alternative,’ and I’m like, ‘This is the time.’”
